Becoming, Participating, and Simply Jesus with Steve Gray, Burleigh Heads Church of Christ
When Pedro sat down with Steve Gray from Burleigh Heads Church of Christ and Griffith University Chaplaincy, the conversation felt less like an interview and more like a gentle reminder of what ministry was always meant to be.
Steve speaks openly about his past, the years chasing music, success, and applause and how God met him in the quiet undoing of it all. Out of that undoing came two lifelong convictions: becoming and participating.
We’re all becoming something, he says; the question is who are we becoming a disciple of?
For Steve, ministry is no longer about performance or polish but about participation. Joining God in the ordinary work of love. He describes the Church not as an audience but a team of players called onto the field. “When did we become places,” he asks, “where the coaches play and the players watch?”
From the op-shop baptisms to his stories of wiping down church bathrooms before our recording, Steve’s words re-centre the calling of every pastor: to lead from humility, to get out of the way so that simply Jesus can be seen.
The thread through it all is Philippians 3:10 - “That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings.”
The gift, Steve reminds us, isn’t position or comfort; the gift is to share in the sufferings of Christ and find Him there.
